An adaptive continuation-multigrid method for the balanced vortex model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Obtaining solutions of the Eliassen balanced vortex model requires solving an invertibility relation, which is a nonlinear elliptic problem of the MongeAmpere type. Multigrid techniques for this problem are investigated. An adaptive algorithm which combines the full multigrid method with continuation in a parameter related to the strength of the forcing is developed. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of this algorithm.

An Adaptive Multigrid Model for Hurricane Track Prediction
SUMMARY This paper describes a simple numerical model for hurricane track prediction which uses a multigrid method to adapt the model resolution as the vortex moves. The model is based on the modiied barotropic vorticity equation, discretized in space by conservative nite diierences and in time by a Runge-Kutta scheme. A multigrid method is used to solve an elliptic problem for the streamfuncti...
متن کاملLocal multigrid methods on hierarchical meshes
This note summarizes the results in [1, 3, 2] on the construction of parallel local multigrid methods. In addition, we present an extended formalization of the adaptive data structure in order to describe precisely the requirements for adaptive multigrid methods with local smoothing for general finite element discretizations. Based on this formalization algorithms can be defined, developed, and...

متن کاملA Multigrid Accelerated High-order Compact Fractional-step Method for Unsteady Incompressible Viscous Flows
The objective of this study is the development of an efficient high-order compact scheme for unsteady incompressible viscous flows. The scheme is constructed on a staggered Cartesian grid system in order to avoid spurious oscillations in the pressure field. Navier-Stokes equations are advanced in time with the second order Adams-Bashford method without considering the pressure terms in the pred...
متن کاملExtension of a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method to viscous rotor flow simulations
Heavy vibratory loading of rotorcraft is relevant for many operational aspects of helicopters, such as the structural life span of (rotating) components, operational availability, the pilot’s comfort, and the effectiveness of weapon targeting systems. A precise understanding of the source of these vibrational loads has important consequences in these application areas. Moreover, in order to exp...
